Competition Format

Olympiad Structure & Evaluation

The Avicenna International Biology Olympiad (AIBO) consists of two main rounds designed to assess both theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills.

Team Composition

Student Participants
Each participating country may send 4 student participants selected through its national biology competition or qualification process.
Team Leaders
Each team is accompanied by two official team leaders who support participants and communicate with the organizers.

Competition Rounds

Round 1: Practical Examination
Hands-on laboratory assessment

Students perform real laboratory experiments to demonstrate practical biological skills, accuracy, and safety awareness.

  • Laboratory-based biological tasks
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Maximum score: 40 points
Round 2: Theoretical Examination
Written biological knowledge assessment

Participants answer written questions covering a wide range of biology topics, from molecular biology to evolution and ecology.

  • Written analytical and problem-based questions
  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Maximum score: 80 points

Total maximum score across both rounds: 120 points

Evaluation & Scoring

Assessment Process
  • All theoretical answers and laboratory results are reviewed by experienced university biologists and researchers.
  • Papers are graded anonymously to ensure fairness and equal treatment of all participants.
  • Results go through multiple stages of review before final approval.
  • Team leaders may request clarification or submit appeals during the official review session if necessary.
